NORMAL PHYSIOLOGY OF SLEEP

Generally NREM sleep happens during the first half of sleep and REM sleep happens during the latter part of sleep.

Ghrelin, on the other hand, is produced by the stomach when we are fasting or hungry. Laboratory studies have clearly shown that sleep deprivation can alter the glucose metabolism and hormones involved in regulating metabolism.  There is decreased leptin levels and increased ghrelin levels.
